Teaching Rico to stop turning every conversation into an enquiry

A look behind our assistant’s personality: fewer sales questions, better listening and a clearer line between chatting and submitting a request.

Two people reviewing code together on a desktop screen

One of the most important changes we made to Rico was not adding something. It was asking him to stop doing something: turning almost every answer into a question about a project.

Someone asks for a joke. The assistant tells one, then asks what website they need. Someone says hello. Suddenly, we are halfway into an enquiry. Technically a conversation; socially, a little exhausting.

We separated conversation from conversion

Rico represents RDBK, but that does not mean every message needs to advertise us. We refined the instructions to recognise different intentions: a casual exchange, a studio question, project discovery and an actual request to prepare an enquiry.

Sometimes the right answer is short. Sometimes it ends without a question. Someone asking about the assistant himself deserves an honest answer, not an awkward detour towards web design.

Facts and personality needed different jobs

Approved business information controls what Rico can say about services and prices. The personality instructions shape how he says it: warm, attentive and occasionally playful, without inventing a human identity or a commercial promise.

We added examples of awkward situations as well as ideal ones. A visitor may give information out of order, return to an earlier subject or decline to share contact details. The conversation should adapt rather than restart an interview.

The interface had to listen too

A returning visitor should not lose the conversation after changing pages. A failed request should offer a retry without asking them to retype the message. While a reply is pending, the state should be visible and understandable.

Those are part of the personality in practice. Friendly wording does little for an interface that forgets what you just said.

The final enquiry remains a deliberate action

When a visitor wants to submit a request, the application handles review, required information and confirmation. Rico cannot make an enquiry real by saying it happened.

That distinction lets him be more relaxed during ordinary conversation. He can help someone explore an idea without treating every exchange as a sales target.

If you are planning an assistant, our chatbot knowledge guide covers the preparation. The most useful starting question may be: would you enjoy talking to this thing yourself?
